Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the Benagil Cave from Sagres?

Not on a boat from here. Benagil is about 60 km east, and no tour departs from Sagres — every Benagil trip you will find leaves from Portimão, Lagos, Carvoeiro or Albufeira, all of them much closer to the cave. If Benagil is the reason for your trip, base yourself further east. What Sagres has instead is open-Atlantic wildlife watching, which those harbours cannot offer.

Will we really see dolphins or whales?

Sightings are common but never guaranteed — these are wild animals in open ocean. Sagres is unusual in that coastal and deep-water species can appear on the same trip, because the shelf drops away quickly off the cape. The flip side is weather: trips here are cancelled more often than on the sheltered south coast, and from roughly November to April several operators only sail with at least six people booked.

Is the online ticket for the Sagres Fortress worth it?

Usually not. At the gate the fortress costs €3, or €1.50 if you are over 65, and it is free for children under 12. The ticket sold online costs €10 and buys convenience rather than a discount. It makes sense if a guided tour is included or if you are arriving on a bus with no time to queue. Opening hours are 9:30 to 17:30 from October to April and until 20:00 from May to September.

Can I get to Sagres and around it without a car?

Getting there, yes: Vamus bus 47 runs from Lagos to Sagres in a little over an hour, several times a day on weekdays but only four times on Sundays. There is no train. Getting around is the harder part — the west-coast surf beaches such as Amado, Bordeira and Castelejo have no bus service at all, and the walk out to Cape St. Vincent is about 6 km each way along an exposed road. That is the main reason people book a jeep or minivan tour here.

Which beach should we pick with children?

Praia da Mareta, right below the village, and Praia do Martinhal in the bay to the east. Both face away from the Atlantic swell, shelve gently and have lifeguards in summer. Praia do Tonel and Praia do Beliche are the surf beaches — beautiful, but they take the full ocean swell and are not places to let small children swim unwatched. Martinhal is also the windiest of the four; windsurfers go there for that reason.

When is the best time to come?

It depends on what you are here for, and the two answers point in opposite directions. Surfers want October to March, when the North Atlantic swell is at its strongest. Anyone who wants to be on a boat, or to swim, wants May to September, when the sea is calmer and the wildlife trips actually run. Sagres stays busy with surfers well outside the beach season, so it never fully empties the way the south-coast resorts do.
