Boat Trips with Kids in Sagres: What Age – and Which of the Three Trips

The most important point first, because it’s an inconvenient one: not one boat trip offer for Sagres states a minimum age in its description. Not the dolphin trips, not the cave tours. The age limit sits with each operator, in the terms and conditions on the booking page; it differs between operators, and it depends on the type of boat. Anyone who reads a general figure here – “from 3”, “from 6” – is reading one that’s been made up.

What can be said instead, and what helps more than a figure, is why Sagres is a different case from the rest of the Algarve.

Here you head out of the bay, not into one

On the south coast, in Portimão, Lagos or Albufeira, excursion boats run along a sheltered coastline. In Sagres, they set off from Porto da Baleeira, round Ponta de Sagres, and are then in the open Atlantic off Cabo de São Vicente.

That’s exactly why the trips here are good: dolphins aren’t sought in a bay but out in open water, which is why operators themselves call their trips “wildlife” trips. But it’s also why a trip here can turn out rougher than the same trip one hundred kilometres further east. The swell runs round the cape, even on days when it looks windless in town.

For parents, that means: age isn’t the first question – whether your child is happy on choppy water for an hour is.

Three durations – and which one works with children

From Sagres harbour there are essentially three formats, and the difference is bigger than the prices suggest.

1.5 hours, dolphin watching, from €50. The short trip. If you want to get on the water with younger children at all, this is the one to book. For most children, an hour and a half is the window in which it stays exciting.

2 hours, dolphins and caves, €65. The combination of dolphin-spotting and coastal caves that aren’t reachable from land. The best compromise with primary-school-age children: if no dolphins turn up, there’s still something to see. That’s exactly the advantage over a pure wildlife search.

3 hours, a wildlife trip with a chance of whales, €95. This trip goes further out and also looks for rarer marine mammals. For adults and teenagers, it’s the most impressive. With young children, it’s the wrong choice – three hours with no way to get off, with longer stretches where nothing happens at all.

There are also departures from Salema, a good twenty kilometres to the east, from €50. One honest caveat: one of these trips is described as having “no fixed route”, which means the time spent out there is less predictable than with a set programme. And the departure point isn’t Sagres – if you’re staying in town, that means half an hour’s drive beforehand.

What to ask before booking

No offer description answers these four questions, and they decide how the day goes:

1. What minimum age applies on this boat? It’s in the terms and conditions. If it isn’t stated there, a short message to the operator is quicker than a discussion on the jetty.
2. Are there life jackets in children’s sizes on board? Life jackets are part of the kit – whether the right size is on board is a question for the operator, not something to assume.
3. Is there a toilet on board? On the small, fast boats that run here, that isn’t a given.
4. Is there shade? Usually not, on open boats. The trip off the cape is exposed, in both directions.

The right time of day

The wind on this stretch typically picks up as the day goes on. A morning trip is therefore, on average, the calmer one, and for children that matters more than the time slot on the calendar.

When operators cancel, it’s for the same reason. A weather cancellation on this coast isn’t an exception but a normal occurrence – and an operator who still went out in too much swell would be the wrong one. Seasickness

Some children feel unwell on choppy water, and the trip round the cape is choppy water. What helps with that is a question for the pharmacy or your child’s paediatrician, not a travel website – we deliberately don’t recommend any remedy here.

What does fall within our remit are the decisions beforehand: the short trip instead of the long one, morning instead of afternoon, a seat amidships instead of right at the front, eyes on the horizon instead of on a phone. And the willingness to skip a booked trip if the day before was already rough.

When to simply skip it

There are situations where a boat trip here is a bad idea, even if it’s bookable:

• With very young children. A trip into the open Atlantic is no place for babies and the youngest toddlers – more on that in Sagres with a Toddler.
• On arrival day. A short night, a long flight, then swell: a reliable combination.
• If your child is expecting dolphins. Wildlife can’t be ordered. No reputable operator guarantees a sighting, and anyone who sets the child up to expect otherwise creates the disappointment themselves. That’s another reason the combined trip with caves is the smarter booking.
• If there’s already wind in town. Out there, it will be more, not less.
